Beeline Interview: Artist Ernest Concepcion

Ernest is one of my favourite artists and I’m so glad he took time out of his busy Fall schedule to chat. His drawings/paintings always make me feel like I’m in the head of a little boy imagining war and anime, adore and friendship - which is a good thing. That child-like quality plus the engrossing detail in his work creates a cinematic feeling. Each time I look at one of Ernest’s pieces, I look something new and am engaged in a new epic adventure. Check out his show, or even better, drop b

Sigh

Even as the dust settles from the recent election, the spoil sporting continues. It appears that Abilene Christian University has arrive below flame in a recent column in The Abilene Reporter News by one of her alumni because the student paper, The Optimist, endorsed Obama. Steve Hemphill, the author of the column, is surely within his rights to criticize his alma mater and to disagree with the student paper, even to take his toys and go home refuse to pay for his kids to go there and to cease s

Well, Duh! But also, Aha!

Biblical Scholars know of Emil Schurer's mammoth 1890 work, A History of the Jewish People in the Time of Jesus Christ. I was reading Appendix #1 on Abilene last week, and today I found a silly line in Appendix #2 on Nabatea. At the end of a very long footnote, explaining several reasons why Damascus was not Arabian, Schurer said something I had to share: Wandel [German scholar, 1887] thinks he has made a completely new discovery when he declares that Damascus was "neither Arabian nor Roman, but

11 Undefeated Football Teams You Don’t Care About

I know, right?  You are likely looking at your fingers and counting off…Ball State, don’t care about them.  Utah?  Care a little, but not really?  Where are the other 9?  NCAA Football runs a little deeper than the Saturday morning tailgates and games below the lights we look on TV.  Outside of the Division I Bowl teams, there are many undefeated teams left that matter to some people. A few weeks ago I was watching my Alma Mater, The University of Dubuque Spartans, getting stomped by the in t

Brittneythew Chapter Five: It's Only $1.29 a Gallon

After the farewell in Abilene, the phone conversations continued! It was still too good to be true! It was crazy how quickly everything was happening, but it was wonderful! Then, on the evening of the 18th, after we had our nightly long phone conversation, someone knocks on the apartment door. And, guess who it was!? MATT POE! He had driven every the way fr

God Does Not See Red States or Blue States…Just Faithful States

I came across this story from my favorite college teacher; I find this piece published in the Abilene Reporter disturbing for attacking the student paper at ACU (Abilene Christian University) In essence, this guy is saying God and wealthy people hate ACU for supporting Obama; does that mean He hates me too? I doubt it. This guy is serving his possess agenda — not that of Christians. As a Christian who supports Obama, I do not think God hates me. Read the entire article here. It is pretty good — but sad

Brittneythew Chapter Four: Romance with the Prairie Dogs

..So, after a week of crazy phone talking, I went home to Abilene for my Dad's baptism. It was such a special time for our family and I was so thrilled to be there for the event. But on that Sunday evening, April 14th, 2002, I had a date! ... A date with the guy who had stolen my heart over the phone and I was SO nervous to talk with him face to face. Honestly, I couldn't quite remember what he looked like. I remember trying so difficult to picture his face and every I could remember was that I though

Wait an Ag Sec: Getting real about who will head the USDA

By Steph Larsen Editor’s note: With readers clamoring in the comments section and a petition started for President-Elect Barack Obama to appoint Michael Pollan as Secretary of Agriculture (read Pollan’s response below), I asked a Beltway-savvy acquaintance to summarize just how fertile the landscape for change might be.
